About Personal Training
Trial Introductory Flight (TIF)
Many people begin with a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF). A Trial Instructional Flight allows you to take the controls – with guidance from one of our experienced instructors – and actually fly the aircraft! In addition, your Trial Instructional Flight comes with temporary (1 day) membership to the Gold Coast Sports Flying Club, allowing you to use the wonderful facilities of the Club and you are issued with a (free) temporary RA-Aus membership (valid for 30 days or 3 hours of flying)
Once you are sure that you would like to obtain your aviation qualification, you can enrol for a Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC), thereafter, you can progress to various endorsements (e.g. Cross Country, Passenger Carrying, etc.). You can achieve standards associated with your requirements.
Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC).
The RPC lets you:
- Fly a recreational aircraft (or Light Sport Aircraft – LSA) with a maximum take-off weight of 600kg.
- Operate within a radius of 25 nautical miles (just under 50km) of the aerodrome from where you initially take off, during day VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions
- Take a friend or family member along as a passenger (once you’ve obtained your passenger-carrying endorsement)
- Fly anywhere in Australia – outside of controlled airspace – once you have obtained your cross-country (or navigation) endorsement
- Accumulate your flying hours and experience which can be used towards higher levels of certification (such as the Recreational Pilot License, Private Pilot License, Commercial Pilot License, etc).
Once you have achieved your RPC, then you may wish to undertake your passenger- carrying endorsement and your cross-country endorsement.
Requirements to obtain your Recreational Pilot Certificate
- RAA membership – we assist with your application
- English proficiency – read, write and verbal communication
- Good general health
- Minimum age: 15 years
Passing of your theory exams – In addition to the comprehensive theory briefings, your instructors will provide additional resources (online + printed) to assist you.
Your flying lessons
Your flying lessons
Your flying lessons are carefully structured to help you develop the range of skills and knowledge necessary to ensure that you can operate and fly a recreational aircraft competently, safely and responsibly. As such, we encourage you to engage in your flying lessons as often as both practical and possible, which will minimise the learning time and costs considerably.
The RA-Aus Syllabus of Flight Training is used as the basis of our flying training. The syllabus mandates a minimum of 20 hours to achieve your RPC (15 hours dual instruction + 5 hours solo flying), but our experience has shown that around 25 hours is a more realistic “average”.
what They're Saying
"Being one of the first students for the GCSFC flight school, I wasn't able to get any feedback on what the instructor was like. I knew Chris Howarth to say hello to but not much more. Being an instructor for some time, and a teacher, Chris has something vital for training students - great communication skills. A great pilot won't always make a great instructor and students definitely need the latter. Chris delivers instruction patiently and calmly which helped me overcome my nervousness & tension... the guy even reminds me to breathe when I'm taking off and landing, which I keep forgetting to do. In addition to that, Chris readily commends you when you've done well - it helps a lot if you're like me and keep beating yourself up. To those wanting to learn to fly 3-axis aircraft, I highly recommend GCSFC flying school... the instructor, the aircraft, the location, the price - it's terrific."
"Once you have flown you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been, and there you long to return."
Leonardo da Vinci.
What an experience I had! The training was excellent and very professional.
I will most definitely in the future make use of your training again and would suggest and promote your courses to my friends and colleagues.
My son and I both enrolled in our flight training a while ago. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The pre-flight lessons were interesting and easy to grasp. Errol is very passionate, friendly and knowledgeable.
Getting my Pilot certificate has been one of my greatest achievements.
At age 65, I’m finally realizing my dream to fly planes. I looked all over the Gold Coast area for a group that would meet my needs and finally found Chris and Gold Coast Sports Flying Club. I like Chris as a teacher – he is a wealth of information, teaching in a relaxed, low-pressure manner and making technical nuances easily understandable. I expected to be stressed and anxious as I learned high banks and how to deal with stalls. Instead, Chris has me following the curves of the inland waterways with a smile on my face that he says “not even a plastic surgeon would be able to get rid of”! An added benefit is the experienced fliers I’m meeting at the club between lessons. Fantastic experiences and conversations!
